A comprehensive, quick-reference guide to solving classic 9×9 Sudoku puzzles.
The Golden Rules
• Row Rule: Every horizontal row must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once without repetition.
• Column Rule: Every vertical column must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once without
repetition.
• Box Rule: Every 3×3 subgrid must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once without repetition
Puzzle Setup
A classic Sudoku game begins with a partially completed grid. These pre-filled numbers are called
“givens“. A proper Sudoku puzzle has exactly one unique solution that can be reached purely through
logical deduction. No guessing is ever required.
Example Component:
Every individual 3×3 box must look like this conceptually, containing every number from 1 to 9 with absolute zero repetition. Rows and columns behave identically across the full 9×9 grid structure
To get started, try using these foundational strategies:
• Scanning: Look at rows and columns to find where a specific number must go within a particular 3×3
box by eliminating other invalid locations.
• Sole Candidate: Examine a single cell. If 8 of the 9 numbers are already eliminated by its row, column,
and box, the remaining number must fill that cell.
• Unique Candidate: Examine a row, column, or box. If a specific number can physically only fit into one
single cell within that region, it must go there
